Knockout stage is not always about picking the better team only. Sometimes the better angle is how both teams can hurt each other, especially when one side has elite finishing and the other side has enough pace and attacking quality to punish mistakes.
Norway Analysis
Norway’s group results were 4-1 against Iraq, 3-2 against Senegal and 1-4 against France. The France defeat looks bad on paper, but that match needs context because Norway rested many first-choice players, including Haaland and Ødegaard.
With Haaland and Ødegaard returning, Norway’s attacking level changes immediately. Haaland already has 4 goals in 2 World Cup appearances, and he does not need many chances to score. One Ødegaard pass, one cross, one loose ball in the box, and the game can change.
But Norway are not a fully safe defensive team. Senegal scored twice against them, and France scored four, even with Norway rotating. So while Norway have serious attacking power, I don’t fully trust them to keep Ivory Coast quiet for 90 minutes.
Ivory Coast Analysis
Ivory Coast’s group results were 1-0 against Ecuador, 1-2 against Germany and 2-0 against Curaçao. They only conceded 2 goals in the group, so defensively they deserve respect.
But this team is not only about defending. Nicolas Pépé scored twice against Curaçao, and they also have players like Yan Diomande and Bonny who can attack space. Against Germany, Ivory Coast scored first before eventually losing 2-1, so they have already shown they can hurt a strong European side.
Match Reading
Norway should have more control through Ødegaard, and the obvious target is Haaland. Ivory Coast will likely stay compact, try to block central passes, and attack quickly when Norway lose the ball.
The important part is both teams have clear scoring routes. Norway can score through Haaland, set pieces, crosses and second balls. Ivory Coast can score through transitions, wide speed, and moments from Pépé or Diomande.
If Norway score first, Ivory Coast must open up. If Ivory Coast score first, Norway will push hard with Haaland and Ødegaard. Either way, the game has a good chance to become more open after the first goal.
This is why I prefer goals more than Norway -0.5. Norway -0.5 loses if the match ends 1-1, but Over 2.5 can win from Norway 2-1, Ivory Coast 2-1, 2-2, or Norway 3-0.
The danger score is 1-1 or 2-0. If Ivory Coast sit too deep and Norway manage the game slowly, Over becomes stressful. But based on Norway’s attacking return with Haaland and Ødegaard, Norway’s defensive questions, Ivory Coast scoring first against Germany, Pépé’s form, and both teams having real attacking weapons, I feel this match has more than one path to 3 goals.
My Pick: ☆Ivory Coast vs Norway Over 2.5 Goals☆
