Knockout stage is always different from group stage. One mistake, one early goal, one forced tactical change and the whole match script can flip very fast.
Germany Analysis
Germany come in as the stronger side with better attacking numbers, but their defensive record has not been fully convincing.
Germany’s group results were 7-1 against Curaçao, 2-1 against Ivory Coast and 1-2 against Ecuador. All three matches went Over 2.5, with Germany scoring 10 goals in 3 games. The attacking output is clear, but the defensive side is also clear: Germany conceded in every group match, even in the 7-1 win over Curaçao.
Against Ivory Coast, Germany conceded first and needed a late comeback. Against Ecuador, they scored early but still lost 2-1. So this is not a team I fully trust for a clean handicap.
Another important point is Undav. Nagelsmann has been criticised for keeping him on the bench, even though Undav has produced 3 goals and 2 assists as a substitute in this tournament. Against Ivory Coast, he came on and scored both Germany goals. If he starts, Germany may have better penalty-box presence. If he does not start, he is still a dangerous second-half option.
Paraguay Analysis
Paraguay are underdogs, but they have shown they can sit deep, absorb pressure and make the game uncomfortable.
Paraguay’s group results were 1-4 against USA, 1-0 against Turkey and 0-0 against Australia. At first glance, two clean sheets in a row look solid, but the Turkey match needs context. Paraguay won 1-0, but Turkey had 33 attempts. That shows Paraguay can survive pressure, but they also allow volume.
Against Germany, allowing that kind of pressure is dangerous. Paraguay also have team news issues, with Diego Gómez suspended and Omar Alderete a doubt with a knee issue. Gómez’s absence affects midfield balance and defensive protection, while Alderete’s doubt is important because he is part of Paraguay’s defensive structure. If a centre-back is missing or not fully fit, it can affect marking, aerial duels, line coordination and second-ball defending.
But Paraguay are not totally toothless. Miguel Almirón is back from suspension, and together with Enciso, Paraguay still have counterattack threat.
Match Reading
Germany should control possession, while Paraguay will likely stay compact, defend deep, slow the tempo and look for counters. But this is knockout football. If Paraguay concede first, they cannot just sit and accept defeat. They must chase or go home.
Once Paraguay open up, Germany will get more space. That is where this game can become more open than a normal group match. The main goal routes are Germany 3-0, Germany 3-1, Germany 2-1, or even a 2-2 type match if Germany’s defence leaks again.
The danger score is 2-0. If Germany score once and control the game slowly, or if Paraguay defend deep with no ambition, Over becomes stressful. But based on Germany’s 10 goals in 3 group games, Germany conceding in every group match, all 3 Germany games going Over 2.5, Paraguay allowing 33 attempts against Turkey, Gómez suspended, Alderete doubtful and Almirón returning, I feel this match has more than one path to 3 goals.
My Pick: ☆Germany vs Paraguay Over 2.5 Goals☆
