Residents in Taman Jurong appear to have taken the practice of "choping" to a whole new level. At a free vegetable and fruit distribution event known as "Share a Pack" held at Taman Jurong Community Club (CC) on May 7 and 21, 2025, residents created a long queue of trolleys, chairs, and cardboard boxes, and other belongings to secure their spots. A passerby told Shin Min Daily News that not only do people leave their belongings en masse to "chope" their spots in the queue, but bring their entire families to claim as much produce as possible. The passerby felt that such behaviour was unacceptable as it could deprive others who might need the produce more. On May 21, the Taman Jurong Kakis Facebook group posted that there would be no more "Share a Pack" distribution sessions held in the CC: The poster showed the produce were given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Chaotic scenes How the system worked was supposed to be straightforward, but apparently got gamed over time. The organising team reportedly handed out queue numbers, with residents collecting produce based on the order of the numbers issued. However, the issuance of queue numbers have not stopped instances of "choping" and queue-cutting, Shin Min reported. Some arrived to queue for the distribution event as early as 10 hours in advance. Some even showed up as early as 4am on May 21 to queue for the distribution session held at 2:30pm. By 1pm, a massive queue of just trolleys, chairs and boxes formed, with no one else in sight. Some foreign domestic workers would also show up, on behalf of their employers, to wait in the queue. One resident, who used to collect fruits and vegetables at the drive, told Shin Min that she was deterred from doing so due to "chaotic queues". The resident said it was exhausting to wait in line, and that there were frequent arguments over queue-cutting. Top photo from Shin Min Daily News.
