Actress Sora Ma, 41, decided to give up her Malaysian citizenship and become a Singaporean - a status granted to her on her birthday on Jan 22.
Last December, she shared that her husband had died.
"Six months ago, my husband left us forever. There was no illness, no warning - it was sudden and completely unexpected. His passing caught me entirely off guard."
In an Instagram post shared on April 17 this year, Ma shared that she was encouraged to do so by her friend Karen "make it easier to handle my child's affairs in the future".
She thanked Dr Koh Poh Koon, former MP for Tampines GRC, for helping her with the process.
Ma shared a photo of herself with Dr Koh and her son Skye, and explained to Shin Min Daily News that she did not have any party affiliation or the intention to rally support for anyone.
"I uploaded the photo because I was moved," said Ma.
Dr Koh told the Chinese daily that he did not know the e-mail asking for help was from an artiste.
"After seeing her e-mail, I told her to come to our meet-and-greet session as soon as possible so that I could learn more about her situation," he said, adding that he and his team did not recognise Ma as an artist even when they met as she had kept her mask on.
"We helped her and succeeded. We are very happy for her."
Ma said she went through the normal process to apply for citizenship and did not receive any special treatment or shortcuts.
Dr Koh pointed out that all residents were treated equally.
"We treat everyone equally and try our best to provide assistance within our capabilities."
