Zahid calls on Malaysian professionals abroad to return and rebuild nation
By Fahmy A Rosli - July 17, 2025 @ 7:10pm

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi delivers his speech during meet-and-greet event with more than 250 members of the Malaysian community in Wellington - BERNAMA PIC
WELLINGTON: Malaysians working abroad, especially engineers and other professionals, are being encouraged to return home and contribute to nation-building.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said low salaries in Malaysia have pushed many to seek opportunities overseas.

During his visit to Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) yesterday, he said that he had received a letter from a Malaysian student in New Zealand requesting job opportunities upon graduation.

"I received a paper proposing that all students studying abroad be offered employment when they return to Malaysia.

"I replied, asking, who will give them jobs? The High Commissioner of Malaysia to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki, said we would discuss it further," Zahid said.

He said that while Malaysia needs about 60,000 engineers annually, the demand is not currently being met.

"Therefore, I urge you to return to our country, especially those in engineering and other professional fields.

"In law and accountancy too; come back to Malaysia," he said at a meet-and-greet event with more than 250 members of the Malaysian community here.

Also present was High Commissioner Mazita Marzuki.

At the event, Zahid announced a contribution of NZ$100,000 (RM251,379) to Rumah Malaysia, referring to the Malaysian Embassy in New Zealand.

In his speech, Zahid advised Malaysian students not to rely solely on classroom learning.

He encouraged them to assimilate with their surroundings and the local culture.

"I am very proud of our youth here.

"They represent Malaysia's best image.

"What's important is that you don't only learn what is taught in class or lectures, learn from your surroundings.

"Assimilate with the local community.

"Understand their culture, particularly the Māori culture," he said.

PETALING JAYA:
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged Malaysian students studying overseas to return home and contribute to the nation’s development after completing their studies.

While acknowledging that salaries in Malaysia may be lower compared with countries such as New Zealand, he emphasised that their expertise is vital to driving the country’s economic growth, Bernama reported.

Zahid also reminded students not to focus solely on academics during their time abroad.

He encouraged them to engage with local communities, noting that social assimilation and cross-cultural understanding are essential for shaping well-rounded Malaysians who are ready to return and serve the nation.

Zahid added that understanding the culture of local communities is key to nurturing reputable and globally minded graduates.

“Don’t just learn at lecture halls, tutorials, or professors’ offices.

“We should also introduce ourselves to the local communities and learn about their cultures – especially the Maori culture here, which is rich in historical values and embodies a strong spirit of resilience,” he said.

Today was the fourth day of Zahid’s official working visit to New Zealand. He is scheduled to conclude his visit and depart for Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

Zahid said he was aware that low salary offers in Malaysia were driving them to migrate abroad. Zahid also added that, especially in the engineering field, Malaysia needs around 60,000 engineers every year, but the current needs are not being met.

“I ask you to return to our country, especially in the field of engineering or other professionals, even in the field of law and accounting, return to Malaysia.”

Govt aims to have Bumiputera holding 70% of high-skilled jobs, 30% equity ownership by 2035
PUTRAJAYA (Aug 19): The Malaysian government has set ambitious targets under the newly launched Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35), aiming to significantly increase Bumiputera participation in high-skilled jobs and equity ownership over the next decade.

PuTERA35, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, outlines the government’s goal is to have 70% of the country’s high-skilled jobs be occupied by the Bumiputera, up from 61% in 2022.

The plan also seeks to raise Bumiputera equity ownership, both by individuals and through Bumiputera-mandated agencies, from 18.4% in 2020 to 30% by 2035.

On top of that, PuTERA35 aims to lift the contribution of Bumiputera companies to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to 15% in 2035, from 9.1% in 2022.

These targets are central to the government’s broader strategy of fostering more meaningful economic participation, ownership, and control by the Bumiputera community, positioning them to better navigate the country’s evolving economic landscape.

Anwar commented that the country’s pace of development should be accelerated without leaving anyone behind.

“The idea is that the economic development should be done with the participation of all people without marginalising any ethnicity, tribe or territory across the country,” the prime minister said, assuring that PuTERA35 will not set aside the interests of other races in the country.

“The Bumiputera-related policy in Malaysia is always an affirmative policy to think and reflect on the situation of injustice, but never to set aside the interests of Indians, Chinese, let alone the Orang Asli or the Bumiputera of Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.

PuTERA35 encompasses three core areas, 12 growth drivers and 132 initiatives to advance and empower Bumiputera development towards making Malaysia a regional economic leader.

According to Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, Bumiputera ownership in public listed companies stood at just 7% as of 2022, representing 62 companies out of the 945 listed on Bursa Malaysia.

In terms of labour participation, the number of unemployed Bumiputeras totalled 387,800, or 61.5% of the national total of 630,400 as of 2022.

Notably, 70.8% of unemployed Bumiputeras are from the youth demographic, aged between 15 and 30 years.

“Based on the spirit of inclusivity, the unity government is committed to ensuring that the Bumiputera agenda continues to be prioritised in every national socioeconomic development plan. This will not deny the rights of other races, on the contrary, it is capable of benefiting all races in terms of the development and progress of the country,” Rafizi said in his opening speech.

“The Bumiputera community has the opportunity and potential to play a more meaningful role in new sectors and industries that have high added value, including the High Growth High Value (HGHV) industry,” he added.

Rafizi also emphasised that the Bumiputera Agenda Empowerment Unit (UPAB) in all ministries will be strengthened and tasked with implementing and closely monitoring PuTERA35 at both the ministry and agency levels.

The transformation plan also calls for contributions from government-linked companies (GLCs), government-linked investment companies (GLICs), and private companies to achieve its goals.
